BIG BLUE WAVE TO ROLL INTO CHIPPEWA VALLEY COUNCIL
We are expecting that a Big Blue Wave of new Cub Scouts is about to join Scouting here in the Chippewa Valley Council this September. School Night for Scouting is when we invite families from our school or community to join us in the adventure of Scouting. Your Cub Scout Pack can help this Blue Wave get bigger by having your School Night person accomplish the "Top 10 Things" a Pack can do. If you need the “Top Ten Things” list, contact your District Executive ASAP! Carye Kringle from this summers Cub World staff and Margaret Almquist are busy orchestrating our new free "Fall Cub Camp" to be held Saturday, October 9th at Cub World in Camp Phillips. This exciting new day camp is for NEW Cub Scouts and their families ONLY. Also this fall, all new Cubs will receive a free "Hot Wheels" car upon joining. We hope to sign up over 700 new Cub Scouts this fall, so stay tuned and watch the Blue Wave roll!! If you have any questions, please call Audun Mikkelson at the Council Service Center at 715-832-6671.

BeAScout: PUTTING SCOUTING ON THE MAP Have you heard? The BSA is using the Internet to build on our annual recruiting efforts! The recruiting campaign is called BeAScout (BeAScout.org). It is for parents, unit leaders, and council staff. Everyone has a different role to play that can help people sign up for Scouting. View the following flyer for more information: BeAScout
Unit Leaders: We strongly encourage you to take the time and get your "pin" personalized. This is a great way to recruit more Scouts in your area! For more BeAScout resources, go to the following link: BeAScout Campaign Resources
MANDATORY YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING Youth safety is the number one concern of the BSA. To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies. Youth Protection Training is required for all registered volunteers effective June 1, 2010. New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training before they submit their application for registration. Also, Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years. Please see the following document for more details regarding these new policies: Youth Protection Training Policies
GOVIN'S MEATS & BERRIES CORN MAZE
This year at Govin’s Meats & Berries in Menomonie, their 8 acre corn maze is in honor of the Boy Scouts of America's 100th Anniversary. They would like to involve the Scouts as much as possible and are wondering if there are Scouts who would like to help with different activities around the farm. This may include helping in the parking area, with the duck races, with the corn box, helping people with pumpkins or just promoting Scouting. The jobs the Scouts would be doing would not have any money handling and it would also be during the day on Saturdays or Sundays. The dates for the maze are September 18 – October 31. The ages they are looking for are Boy Scouts or older. In turn for the Scout's help, they would make a donation to the Scout troop that is helping that day. If your troop would like to work both days and would like to set up camp there, that is possible too. If this is something your unit would be interested in, please contact John and Julie Govin by September 10th so they can plan accordingly. They can be reached at 715-231-2377. For more information about Govin's Meats & Berries, view the following flyer: Govin's Meats & Berries

TWO NEW OUTDOOR AWARDS UNVEILED
Two new awards have been developed to promote "outdoorism" for Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts. The National Outdoor Challenge (No. 430-016) is a unit award that recognizes troops/teams that maintain or increase the amount of outdoor activity when compared to the previous year. The information and application is available here: National Outdoor Challenge and is due at the end of 2010. With the release of this award, the National Camping Award has been discontinued; however, patches for camping nights will be available until the inventory is depleted.
The National Outdoor Achievement Award (No. 430-509) recognizes Boy Scouts/Varsity Scouts that excel in outdoor participation. The award consists of five areas of emphasis (camping, aquatics, hiking, riding and adventure) with rigorous requirements to earn each segment. Scouts looking for an extra challenge can earn the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement. This challenging award requires earning at least three of the National Outdoor Achievement segments, planning and leading a trek, earning Wilderness First Aid and becoming a Leave No Trace Trainer as well as several other requirements. The information and application is available at the following link: National Outdoor Achievement Award

100th ANNIVERSARY HISTORICAL MERIT BADGE PROGRAM
In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America celebrates a century of influencing the lives of America’s youth. To allow today’s youth members to experience a piece of Scouting’s past, the BSA’s 2010 Historical Merit Badge program will bring back four discontinued merit badges. These merit badges must be started and completed during the centennial year, starting April 1, 2010, through Dec. 31, 2010. The historical merit badges are Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, and Tracking, which were all released between 1910 and 1911. In addition to completing the same requirements as Scouts did a century ago, today’s Scouts will learn what that their counterpart in 1910 might have experienced. They will learn why Morse code might have been important during a period when most homes had no TV, radio, computer, telephone, or electricity. However, the value of the program for young people is to understand the changes in 100 years of Scouting. Information about the 2010 Historical Merit Badge Program, including requirements, may be downloaded at: www.scouting.org/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/MeritBadges.aspx
