MANDATORY YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING Youth safety is the number one concern of the BSA. To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies. Youth Protection Training is required for all registered volunteers effective June 1, 2010. New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training before they submit their application for registration. Also, Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years. Please see the following document for more details regarding these new policies: Youth Protection Training Policies

100th ANNIVERSARY HISTORICAL MERIT BADGE PROGRAM
In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America celebrates a century of influencing the lives of America’s youth. To allow today’s youth members to experience a piece of Scouting’s past, the BSA’s 2010 Historical Merit Badge program will bring back four discontinued merit badges. These merit badges must be started and completed during the centennial year, starting April 1, 2010, through Dec. 31, 2010. The historical merit badges are Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, and Tracking, which were all released between 1910 and 1911. In addition to completing the same requirements as Scouts did a century ago, today’s Scouts will learn what that their counterpart in 1910 might have experienced. They will learn why Morse code might have been important during a period when most homes had no TV, radio, computer, telephone, or electricity. However, the value of the program for young people is to understand the changes in 100 years of Scouting. Information about the 2010 Historical Merit Badge Program, including requirements, may be downloaded at: www.scouting.org/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/MeritBadges.aspx
FLAG RAISING OPPORTUNITIES Help is needed for raising the flag at the Owen Park band concerts this summer. Concerts start at 7:30. This is a great opportunity for your unit to do service for the community, and show respect to our nation's flag. The available dates are as follows: 6/17, 6/24, 7/4 (held at the Chippewa Valley Museum at noon), 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, and 8/5 On July 8th, Dick Hazelton would like to tie the 100th year celebration of Scouting into the theme for the band concert. He would like every Scout in attendance in uniform for the event. Scouts in attendance will be doing a special ceremony and marching to the "Boy Scout March." In addition, he would like a Troop to volunteer their services to set up a model campsite. This would be a great chance to showcase Scouting in the community. For more information or to volunteer your services, please contact Dick Hazelton at rhazelton2251@charter.net or 834-2251.

SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTING PREPARATION Now is the right time of year to begin making plans for a successful School Night for Scouting this Fall. School Night for Scouting is when we invite families from our school or community to join us in the adventure of Scouting. Begin by selecting a school night chairperson for your unit. It will be this person’s responsibility to attend your District’s School Night Training and to be the main contact person with the District Executive. Attending the School Night Training AND submitting your selected date to the District Executive will result in an extra 1% commission for your unit on the popcorn sale. Clearwater, Glaciers End, and Tall Oaks hold their trainings at 7pm on August 10th. The Blue Hills District training is on August 12th. Also, your unit can begin to brainstorm ideas for promoting Scouting in your community. Options include: posters at church or businesses, flyers handed out in a parade or community festival, inserts about Scouting in your church bulletins, invitations for Scouts to hand out at school and whatever other great ideas you think of.
